Corolla, North Carolina

Built in the mid-1920's, Corolla Island, as it was originally named, continues to stand as one of the most spectacular landmarks on the Currituck Outer Banks. Owners, Edward Collings and Marie Louise Knight traveled to Corolla from points north and used Corolla Island as their winter residence from 1925-34. Boasting beaux-arts and art nouveau architectural styling and accented with Tiffany lamps, cork-tiled floors, brass duck head and water lily hardware, this magnificent structure stood isolated for years on these remote barrier islands. Renamed Whalehead Club by second owner, Ray Adams, the house was used in a variety of ways over the years. It became home to the U.S. Coast Guard, Corolla Academy, Atlantic Research, and groups of developers. The site is currently nearing the end of a $5.6 million restoration, taking it back to the Knight's original vision. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Located in the shadow of the Currituck Beach Lighthouse (circa 1875) in the village of Corolla, follow NC 12 North to the Whalehead Club entrance.
