Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina

Avalon Fishing Pier at Sunrise

Although the Kill Devil Hills post office was established in 1933 and the town was incorporated in 1953, the name Kill Devil Hill was present on maps as early as 1808 to denote the sand dune of that name.  It was the first incorporated town along the banks and today boasts the largest permanent population in Dare County.  The blend of year-round neighborhoods, vacation cottages and visitor accommodations gives the area a special flavor.  The town of Kill Devil Hills holds special activities through out the year including the Trash Attack in April and the Fire Prevention Parade in October.

Bordered to the west by Kitty Hawk Bay and to the east by the sparkling Atlantic, Kill Devil Hills offers several ocean and sound accesses which present many options for enjoying the water, either as a participant or a spectator.  boaters and jet-skiers will enjoy the public boat ramp located soundside between Avalon Drive and Durham Street.  Sand dunes and a maritime forest also make-up the town's landscape.  Be sure to see the Nags Head Woods Preserve visitor center located at the end of Ocean Acres Drive to learn more about this unique coastal ecosystem.

Kill Devil Hills is home to many shops, restaurants, motels and recreational opportunities making it one of the most service-friendly towns along the Outer Banks.  The Thomas A. Baum Center, a county operated adult services and senior center and a branch of the Dare County Library are located on Mustian street, one block west of the 158 by-pass at milepost 8.5.  Visitor can tour the Wright Brothers Memorial where the first manned power flight in a craft heavier than air took place in 1903.  The eyes of the world will be upon this seaside hamlet in the year 2003 when the town will host the celebration of the Centennial of the First Flight.
